Updates from last month's column:

The WarpZilla team has released Firefox version 1.5 as of 11/29/2005. This is an update to Firefox that was demoed by Tony Butka at previous SCOUG general meetings. It is a stand-alone browser based on Mozilla that does not include mail, news, composer, IRC, and the other frills. A recent announcement said that there will not be any more versions of Mozilla (as produced by the Mozilla Foundation) past the 1.7.x series, so Firefox is now the Foundation's official browser. Go to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.5/contrib/. The file name is firefox-1.5.en-US.os2.zip. More info is at http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/.

NOTES:

2. You must unzip the zip file yourself into a directory and then create or update a program object accordingly.
3. This version requires the GCC runtime: download that at http://download.innotek.de/gccos2/runtime/libc-0.5.1.exe (a self-installing executable). The EMX runtime is no longer required if you don't already have it installed. The GCC runtime installer defaults to x:\OS2\DLL (where x is your OS/2 or eComStation boot drive); it may be preferable to put the runtime in the same directory as the Firefox executable.

DVDBurn version 0.9.32 has been released as of 11/27/2005. This is a GUI front-end for ffmpeg, DVDAuthor, mkisofs2, and DVDDAO to transcode video files, create a DVD structure, and build and burn a DVD image. Use search key dvdburn on Hobbes.

PHPMyAdmin version 2.6.4-pl4 has been released as of 11/15/2005. This is a set of PHP scripts to administer MySQL over the web. Go to http://phpmyadmin.sourceforge.net/.

NetBeans version 5.0 beta 2 has been released as of 11/11/2005. NetBeans Developer is a Java IDE written in pure Java. The IDE is based on JFC, and uses its' full feature-set. Full support of JavaBeans, use the BeanWizard to generate your own beans in minutes. Integrated full- featured text editor, debugger, compiler, pluggable Look & Feel, and Form Editor with advanced layout manager support. Go to http://www.netbeans.org/.

ClamAV version 0.87.1b has been released as of 11/27/2005. This is a GPL anti-virus toolkit, which features a command-line scanner, a tool for automatic updating via the Internet, and integration with mail servers (attachment scanning). Use search key clamav on Hobbes.

bootAble version 4.2.2 has been released as of 11/24/2005. This is a script which can be used to create a maintenance partition or bootable CD with enough facilities to fully manage and recover your system. It contains support for LVM, HPFS, JFS, FAT32, UDF (turned off by default), and the CD file system. Go to http://www.xs4all.nl/~hrbaan/.

SciTech SNAP Graphics version 3.1.2 beta has been released as of 11/17/2005. This is a universal video driver, with support for over 230 graphic chipsets, with extra features like zooming and multi-head. The latest version adds support for more Nvidia and ATI chipsets, video overlays on Intel chipsets, software OpenGL 1.5 support, optional unattended installation, and more. Willibald Meyer has released as of 11/06/2005 a GenMAC package for wireless adapters. This wrapper allows the use of Win32 network adapter drivers. This is a "generalized driver" for network cards which properly supports Resource Manager and APM. It currently supports the following NICs: SIS 900, nForce2 MCP-T, nForce MCP-T, NS-DP83820 Gigabit, and 3Com 3C90xC (including the mini-PCI versions). A USB 1.1 Expanded Control Driver has been released as of 11/30/2005. It provides the source code of a device driver to directly control classless USB devices attached to an OS/2 system. It includes 2 sample applications written in C and 3 sample REXX procedures. It has been specifically designed to ease the development and test of simple homemade USB devices under OS/2. It uses standard/vendor control transfers and data (bulk/interrupt) transfers. Use search key usbecd on Hobbes.

DFSee, which was presented by Tony Butka at the March 2004 SCOUG general meeting, is now at version 7.14 as of 11/08/2005. It is an FDISK, display, analysis, and recovery tool for disks and filesystems. It includes the ability to resize FAT and FAT32 partitions, and has some JFS and LVM support. Jan van Wijk, the author of DFSee, has released TPOSD (ThinkPad On Screen Display utility) version 1.05 as of 11/12/2005. It displays the current settings for several ThinkPad BIOS-related settings, such as:

• Speaker volume and muting
• LCD brightness
• Monitor selection (VGA/LCD/dual)

XWorkplace version 1.0.4 has been released as of 11/15/2005. This was part of Gary Granat's series on "Seeking Ways to Get Rid of System Bloat". Features include: virtual desktops using xPager (formerly PageMage), a replacement for WarpCenter (XCenter), a trash can, most of the NPSWPS and WarpEnhancer features, object hotkeys, lots of new settings pages, and all the features of XFolder version 0.85. UpdCD version 2.53 has been released as of 11/05/2005. It can be used to update the base Warp 3, Warp 4, Warp Server for e-Business, Convenience Pack, or eComStation installation files with FixPaks, and supports the creation of updated installation diskettes. You can use the updated OS/2 image in conjunction with these diskettes to create new installations of OS/2 which already incorporate the FixPaks and other software. Go to http://www.updcd.tk. NOTE: This is a fix release which should be installed on top of an existing UpdCD 2.5x installation.

NetLabs has released Samba version 3.0.9 alpha 6 as of 11/06/2005; both client and server are included. Samba allows you to mount SMB or CIFS shares on OS/2 without the need of NetBIOS (IBM LAN Manager or IBM Peer). Samba is freely available under the GNU General Public License; you can download the full OS/2 source code from NetLabs CVS. Go to ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/samba/. Wireless LAN Monitor version 2.02 has been released as of 11/23/2005. It is available as a XCenter widget as well as a stand-alone program, and features connection monitoring, multiple connection profiles, generation of WEP keys, and more. Go to http://wlan.netlabs.org/.

JAlbum version 6.0 has been released as of 11/02/2005. This is a web photo album generator that runs on Java. Go to http://jalbum.net/.

Apache, the premier web server of the Internet, is now at version 2.0.55 as of 10/30/2005. It offers big performance improvements over the older versions, due to multi-threading and elimination of some EMX dependencies. Moneydance 2005r3 has been released as of 11/09/2005. It is a personal finance manager written completely in Java. It includes transaction auto-completion, graphing, reporting, a reconciliation tool, running cleared vs. uncleared balances, transaction sorting, double-entry, multiple currencies, multiple accounts, and much more. DVDDAO version 1.2.0 has been released as of 11/24/2005. It is a tool for writing DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM discs. Use search key dvddao on Hobbes.

CDDVDrtools version 1.1b has been released as of 11/22/2005. This is based on CDRecord 2.01.01a03 with CDRtools 2.01.01a01 ossdvd patch. It doesn't require ASPIROUT.SYS, and USB CD/DVD devices are supported. Go to ftp://celkunststoffen.khlim.be/os2/. NOTE: You need the latest OS2CDROM.DMD (10.157 or later), which introduced a new CD/DVD transport.

CDRDAO2 version 1.2.0 fix1 has been released as of 11/24/2005. It is a free CD-R/RW writing program for Disk At Once mode. Use search key cdrdao2 on Hobbes.

Tame/2 version 1.02 has been updated as of 11/19/2005. It is a GUI front-end for SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy), which now comes as a complete scanning solution, together with SANE 1.0.16 for SCSI and USB scanners. It has a preview window, supports MMOS2 image formats and light tables, and more. Many scanners from Microtek, Epson, HP, Mustek, Umax, and more are known to be working with this package. CBIRC version 1.12 has been released as of 11/22/2005. This is a Java IRC client with features that include color, web links, DCC, and more. Go to http://www.bratschi.net/cbirc/.

An OS/2 port of GCC 3.3.5 has been released as of 11/17/2005. It includes Innotek LIBC 0.6, which is based on BSD LIBC. Features include fork() support, symlinks, chroot support, and many new functions. Go to ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/. NOTE: Source code is also available at http://svn.netlabs.org/libc/.

Qt version 3.3.1 RC 6 (release candidate 6) has been released as of 11/22/2005. It is a C++ graphics toolkit; the KDE desktop environment for Linux is based on it. Go to ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/qt3/.

NetOp Remote Control version 8.0 has been released as of 10/10/2005. It offers fast, secure, and stable cross-platform remote control, file transfer, and chat capabilities with other OS/2 users as well as any Windows or network DOS NetOp module. XWLAN version 2.02 has been released as of 11/23/2005. It is a XCenter widget that allows you to monitor the status of your wireless LAN devices, providing connection profile support, automatic connection scan on startup and key generation, profile import/export and more. It is available as XCenter widget and stand-alone program; it requires wireless LAN hardware and drivers. English and German National Language support. Use search key xwlan on Hobbes. NOTE: XWorkPlace (see above) or eWorkPlace (which comes with eComStation) is a prerequisite.

JRescuer version 2.20 has been released as of 11/27/2005. Included is JUne (JFS Unerase) version 2.20. This is a tool to rescue files from a JFS volume which cannot be mounted. Go to http://en.ecomstation.ru/projects/jrescuer/.

ePDF version 2.0 beta 23 has been released. This is a PM tool for PostScript to PDF conversion, which uses GhostScript as the back-end. Go to http://www.subsys.de/ePDF/.

eComStation Maintenance Tool version 2.1.9.0 has been released as of 11/29/2005. As the name implies, it is used to apply updates to eComStation. If you are a registered eComStation user, go to http://www.ecomstation.com/; after signing-in, you can download the Maintenance Tool.
