I am not sure what you mean by "update." I deleted the printer icon and 
reinstalled the printer. 
I also went into job properties and changed from default "photo" to 
"text/graphics." 
I also tried changing the font from courier to times new roman, and the 
"bold" to "normal." 
None of those changes did anything. Do I perhaps need to shut down and 
reboot after each change?

Done -- no effect.

Again I don't understand "hold the printer queue." Can you be more 
specific as to how I do that?
