Martin, 
I run DFSEE from its own boot floppy (the BOOTDSK 
distribution of DFSEE -- not to be confused with 
OS/2's own BOOTDISK utility), or from a DFSEE bootable 
CD.  These are actually FREEDOS based.  It avoids 
having any in-use OS or locked files issue, relating 
to the HDD.  The image file is generally written to a 
large FAT-32 partition I just use for extra storage.
