OK, technically I'm off-topic, since I'm not seeking help.
But last night, my DSL went down. I called my ISPs tech support, and got
a return call right away. Apparently they had moved their cables and
"redback" (?) downstairs, and cut people off for about 15 minutes.
However, my connection remained down. I reset everything, but couldn't
ping anything, including my gateway. My DSL modem was showing a
connection. So they put in a help ticket to SBC.
This morning, still not able to connect, I tried a tracerte, and saw it
went from my IP address to an address I'll call aaa.aaa.aaa.a, and then
stopped. I had an idea, and changed the gateway setting from
bbb.bbb.bbb.bb to aaa.aaa.aaa.a. It worked!
I spoke with my ISPs tech support, and they said that they hadn't changed
anything, and that bb.bbb.bbb.bbb should not have worked. But I had used
it from day1, with no problems!
Very odd. Anyone have any theories about what was going on here?
