No, your server only needs to be up when you receive mail. : )
re: earthlink, I got earthlink recently over time warner cable. Too far
from the CO to get dsl. It's standard service, a plain old tcpip
connection, I have a router serving dhcp, everything I have on my lan
works fine. It's been completely reliable, generally fast, up to about 2
megabits though most sites don't seem to have that much capacity.
Earthlink is great if you travel. Dialups just about everywhere.
