That's because your FAX is on COM2 and you installed a debug kernel, which
by default, takes over COM2. You are somewhat lucky your system did not
just freeze up and enter the kernel debugger waiting for you to enter
debug commands at the debug console attached to COM2.

This is the supported update for the retail kernel.
