Updates from last month's column:

DFSee, which has been presented by Tony Butka at previous SCOUG general meetings, is now at version 9.06 as of 01/12/2008. It is a FDISK, display, analysis, and recovery tool for disks and filesystems. It includes the ability to resize FAT and FAT32 partitions, and has JFS and LVM support. NOTES:

  1. You can also use search key dfsee on Hobbes.
  2. DFSee is shareware. Registration is at Mensys (http://shop.mensys.nl/catalogue/mns_DFSee.html).
  3. There is a zip file version, and now a version that can be installed using WarpIN as well.

WPS-Wizard version 0.6.1a1 has been released as of 01/12/2008. This is a WPS add-on which provides desktop gadgets, and gives you freely configurable context menus for all filesystem objects. You may have different extended menus for different classes. It now includes support for PNG icon themes; there are Noia blue and warm themes available as of 10/05/2007. Cairo is used for rendering, so alpha-blending can be used. Go to http://svn.netlabs.org/wps-wizard/.

NOTES:

  1. This is an update that should be used with an already installed version 0.6.0; get the update at ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/incoming/wps-wizard-0.6.1a1-eng.zip.
  2. Some PNG icon themes are available at ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/wps-wizard/theme/.
  3. Version 1.3 of some "dark glass" PNG icon themes (as of 01/14/2008) are at ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/incoming/.

The Java Image Browser Sorter version 2.0.1 has been released as of 01/01/2008. This program requires Java 1.4. Go to http://img-browse-sort.sourceforge.net/.

PHPMyAdmin version 2.11.4 has been released as of 01/12/2008. This is a set of PHP scripts to administer MySQL over the web. Go to http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/index.php.

Personal Cards Manager has been updated as of 01/11/2008. This enables you to store personal data about your friends, colleagues, and customers in objects on the desktop, offering your contacts in mail and applications. Go to http://en.ecomstation.ru/projects/wpperson/.

NOTE: According to Steve Wendt, this latest release is apparently known to be unstable.

Simple Samba Configuration Center has been updated as of 01/25/2008. This allows you to edit an available SMB.CONF, already available keys, and add/remove shares and printers. There are also other Samba-related utilites available on the web site. Go to http://members.aon.at/herwig.bauernfeind/samba/.

bootAble version 5.0 has been released as of 01/23/2008. This is a script which can be used to create a maintenance partition or bootable CD with enough facilities to fully manage and recover your system. It contains support for LVM, HPFS, JFS, FAT32, UDF, and the CD file system. Go to http://www.xs4all.nl/~hrbaan/bootAble/.

Privoxy (formerly known as JunkBuster) is now at version 3.0.8 as of 01/21/2008. This is a web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for protecting privacy, filtering web page content, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners, pop-ups, and other obnoxious Internet junk. K Movie Player version 0.4.1 has been released as of 01/24/2008. This is a movie player based on FFPlay, without SDL dependencies and support for DIVE, SNAP video overlays, and WarpOverlay. Use search key kmp on Hobbes.

A test version of MPlayer has been released as of 01/24/2008. This has support for DIVE, SNAP video overlays, WarpOverlay, and Win32 codecs. It also includes MEncoder, a simple movie encoder. Most MPEG/VOB, AVI, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, RealMedia, Matroska, NUT, NUT, NuppelVideo, FLI, YUV4MPEG, and more are supported. Use search key mplayer on Hobbes.

PMRaw version 2.1 rev.2 has been released as of 01/10/2008. This is a graphical front-end to DCRaw, which allows you to display images from digital cameras in RAW format, and convert them to BMP or JPG. Go to http://os2.zworks.de/PMRaw/eng/.

DragText version 3.9 has been released as of 01/02/2008. OverDrag allows you to press MB1 or a hotkey while dragging text and objects to: open folders, locate objects, scroll windows, minimize & restore windows, expand branches in tree view, and more. After the drag, DT will even clean-up, restoring windows and closing folders you opened. It has support for Odin applications, and a "moving targets" feature. It also allows you to open objects directly from text using drag/drop; access a file or program object's menu from any window it opens. Also featured are DTProgram, a freeware program object enhancement, and a revised DTClip class that combines a clipboard viewer with its' drag/drop equivalent. Gendatam Suite beta 3 release 7 has been released as of 01/02/2008. This is a Java family history application, providing support for the Gedcom format. Go to http://www.gendatam.com/.

Speex version 1.2 beta3 (r2) has been released as of 01/11/2008. This is an open-source voice codec, designed to compress voice at bitrates in the 2-45 Kbps range. Possible applications include VOIP, Internet audio streaming, archiving of speech data (e.g. voice-mail), and audio books. Use search key speex on Hobbes.

Enigmail version 0.95.6 has been released as of 01/10/2008. This allows you to use GnuPG with your e-mail in Thunderbird and/or SeaMonkey. Go to http://enigmail.mozdev.org/home/index.php. NOTE: A tutorial on setting it up is at http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14963/2/.

FM/2 version 3.9.0 has been released as of 01/09/2008. This is an open-source GUI file manager program, with lots of extra helper utilities. Use search key fm2- on Hobbes.

A FLAC plugin for PM123, based on flac-1.2.1, has been released as of 01/09/2008. FLAC is an open-source lossless audio codec. Use search key flacplay on Hobbes.

IMERJ version 0.7 has been released as of 01/09/2008. This is a "poor man's" Japanese input method editor, which allows you to enter Japanese Kana by typing Romanized text in the edit window. It is intended primarily for use on non-Japanese systems where a proper IME is not available. Input is Kana only -- Kanji conversion is not supported. Scribus version 1.3.3.11 beta 1 has been released. This page layout program supports professional publishing features, such as CMYK color, separations, ICC color management, and versatile PDF creation. Go to http://www.scribus.net/.

Cairo version 1.4.14 has been released as of 01/20/2008. It is a vector graphics library designed to provide high-quality display and print output. According to Steve Wendt, Mozilla is moving towards using Cairo as its' rendering engine. Go to ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/incoming/; eventually it should be in ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/Cairo/.

Whois version 4.7.24 has been released as of 01/18/2008. This is a new whois (RFC 954) client that is intelligent and can automatically select the appropriate whois server for most queries. Use search key whois on Hobbes. NOTE: Our treasurer, Steven Levine, helped on the NLS and long option support in this version.

Mr. Message has been updated as of 01/17/2008. This is an instant messenger client which is capable of communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR protocol. Go to http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage/.

SmartCVS version 6.0.6 has been released as of 01/15/2008. This is a Java CVS GUI client, with features such as built-in File Compare/Merge, Transaction Display or List Repository Files, and more. It requires Java 1.4.1 or higher. Go to http://www.syntevo.com/smartcvs/index.html.

WDSibyl has been updated as of 01/13/2008. This is an open-source continuation of the commercial product Sibyl, which is a Pascal/Delphi compiler. Go to http://www.wdsibyl.org/.

ChatZilla version 0.9.80 has been released as of 01/13/2008. This is the IRC client that comes with the Mozilla/SeaMonkey suite. It now supports SSL and full Unicode nicknames. Go to http://www.hacksrus.com/~ginda/chatzilla/.

Wireless LAN Monitor version 3.10 has been released as of 01/26/2008. It is available as a XCenter widget as well as a stand-alone program, and features connection monitoring, multiple connection profiles, generation of WEP keys, and more. Go to http://wlan.netlabs.org/.

DOSBox version 0.7.2 has been released as of 01/25/2008. This is a DOS emulator that uses SDL; it emulates XMS, EMS, CGA, EGA, VGA, VESA, SoundBlaster, Gravis Ultra Sound, and more, for excellent compatibility with older games. InJoy Firewall version 4.1 has been released a couple of months ago (11/26/2007). This runs on a computer with an Internet connection and acts as an Internet gateway for other computers on your private LAN. The product is designed for LAN-to-LAN configurations, including the many new cable modem and DSL installations. It features: PPP over Ethernet support, support of the interoperable IPSec VPN standard, NDIS Protocol Engine, NAT support (RFC 1631-style Network Address Translation), direct Internet access for your LAN PCs, no reconfiguration on other machines, PM version, link monitoring with statistics and alerting, support for filter and firewall plugins, identd support, priority setting, and more.
