Updates from last month's column:

The WarpZilla team has released Mozilla 1.2.1 as of 12/02/2002. This is an update to WarpZilla 0.9.2 that Dave Watson demoed at the July 2001 SCOUG general meeting, was mentioned in the May 2002 Mr. Know-It-All, and was demoed by Steven Levine at the Sept. 2002 SCOUG general meeting. Go to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.2.1/. There are 2 files (take your pick):

  • mozilla-os2-1.2.1-installer.exe (now a self-extracting executable/installer)
  • mozilla-os2-1.2.1.zip (you must unzip it yourself into a directory)

  3. MultiZilla version 1.1.32 beta 2 has been released as of 11/18/2002. This is an extension that adds more features to the tabbed interface in Mozilla. Go to http://multizilla.mozdev.org/.

Lynx version 2.8.5 dev11 has been released as of 12/02/2002. It is a text-mode browser that is the subject of a multi-part review by Dallas Legan, and was also mentioned in the May 2002 Mr. Know-It-All. This version now has SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) support and NLS support, and is now packaged as a self-installing EXE file. Use search key lynx on Hobbes.

JAlbum version 2.8.4 has been released as of 11/21/2002. This is a web photo album generator that runs on Java 1.3, which means you need a current Software Choice subscription or eComStation. Go to http://www.datadosen.se/jalbum/.

DFSee, which was demoed at the June 2001 SCOUG meeting, is now at version 5.05 as of 11/12/2002. It is a FDISK, display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems. It now includes some JFS and LVM support. Go to http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee.htm, or use search key dfsee on Hobbes. bootAble version 2.13 has been released as of 11/15/2002. It is a script which can be used to create a maintenance partition or bootable CD with enough facilities to fully manage and recover your system. It contains support for LVM, HPFS, JFS, FAT32, UDF (turned off by default), and the CD file system. Go to http://www.xs4all.nl/~hrbaan/.

CDR/RW Wizard version 1.0 beta RC5 was released as of 11/18/2002. It is a GUI wizard interface to CDRecord/2 to burn CD-R/CD-RW (data, audio, etc.). It now features BootWizard, for creating bootable CD's, and CDRDAO/2. Go to http://www.quasarbbs.net/rocco/.

An open-source version of 4OS2, version 3.04B, has been released as of 11/23/2002. This replaces the standard CMD.EXE that comes with OS/2 in an OS/2 command-prompt session. Go to ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/devel/beta/.

Ghostscript version 8.00 is now available as of 11/21/2002. It is a freeware PostScript interpreter/converter for generating Adobe Acrobat (PDF) documents. It is also the display engine for GSView (the graphical document viewer). Go to ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/AFPL/gs800/.

The RAR archiver has been updated as of 11/11/2002 to version 3.10 beta 3. This is a command-line compression utility, with tight general and multimedia compression, recovery record option management of non-RAR archives, RCVT aRchive ConVersion Tool, and more. Go to http://www.rarlab.com/.

IBM has updated as of 11/18/2002 the printer drivers for laserjets, inkjets, PostScript printers and Omni printers to level 30.778. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/free/printerpak/en/????????.EXE, where ???????? is

  • PSCRIPTEN (PostScript),
  • OMNIEN (Omni printers such as Okidata & Canon), or
  • LASERJETEN (laserjets).

IBM has updated as of 10/18/2002 the USB printer support package. HOWEVER: You need a current Software Choice subscription to download. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/usbprint.exe.

JJSCDROM.DMD was updated as of 11/19/2002. It is an alternative to OS2CDROM.DMD, which fixes some problems and adds a few features. Use search key jjscd on Hobbes, or go to http://www.sys3175.com/~jjsuwa/.

Amouse version 2.2 beta has been updated as of 11/23/2002. USB support has now been added. This is a scroll mouse device driver that works better on some wheel mice than IBM's driver. There is also a widget for XCenter available. Go to http://www.nbsoftware.de/sw_ms21en.htm.

UpdCD version 2.25 has been released as of 12/01/2002. It can be used to update the base Warp 4 or Warp Server for e-Business installation files with FixPaks, and supports the creation of updated installation diskettes. You can use the updated OS/2 image in combination with these diskettes to create new installations of OS/2 which already incorporate the FixPaks and other software.     NOTES:
  1. This is an update that must be applied to the base 2.2 version.
  2. Support for FixPak3 for Convenience Pack, Device Driver FixPak 3 is now added, among other changes.


This month's new listings - Drivers:

SciTech has released SNAP Graphics version 2.1 beta 1 as of 11/27/2002. One important change is that the driver will now be installed into the x:\OS2\DRIVERS\SNAP sub-directory instead of the x:\OS2\DRIVERS\NUCLEUS sub-directory (x is your OS/2 boot drive). Therefore, if you upgrade from a previous version of SNAP Graphics, either uninstall the previous version first, or else remove the \OS2\DRIVERS\NUCLEUS sub-directory afterwards. Other changes are: improved support for ATI Radeons and some other ATI chipsets; the latest version (B.095) of the IBM GRADD components, etc. The list of changes in this beta is at http://www.scitechsoft.com/snap2_changes.txt; the driver and README is at ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/snap/os2/beta/.

IBM has updated MOUSE.SYS to version 10.087. This contains some fixes for the ThinkPad T30, and also fixes the long-standing problem with the middle button on 3-button Logitech mice. IBM has updated the Ethernet driver for the Intel PRO/100 VE LAN adapter for the ThinkPad T23 & T30 series as of 11/08/2002. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/tpveall.exe.

    NOTES:
  1. This appears to be a self-extracting file.
  2. Installation is thru the MPTS utility (Multi-Protocol Transport Services).

The National Semiconductor DP83820 Ethernet driver is now at version 1.05.06 as of 11/18/2002. Use search key dp82x on Hobbes.

The National Semiconductor DP83815 Ethernet driver is now at version 1.05.07 as of 11/21/2002. Use search key tigris on Hobbes.

The Tamarack TC9021 Ethernet driver is now at version 1.02 as of 11/13/2002. Use search key tc902x on Hobbes.


This month's new listings - Applications:

The eComStation Maintenance Tool is now at version 1.10.5.2 as of 11/09/2002. It is billed as a major update. Be sure to get the latest language files as well. Go to http://www.ecomstation.com (HOWEVER: You must be a registered user of eComStation to download).

Maul Publisher is now at version 2.21 as of 11/09/2002. It is billed as "the world's first professional desktop publisher for OS/2". It will automatically take care of page numbering in folding booklets, reversal of margins for facing pages, page numbering offsets where you don't want to start from Page 1, reversal of margins for top-bound booklets and top-folding booklets, centering margins on printers with odd margins, and multiway folding sheets and maps. In addition, you have full control of column, row, gutter, and center gutter guides, including the automatic adjustment of page offsets when a number of sheets are bound into a folding booklet. The Neptune project is a giant library of "skins" for the PM123 MP3 player. Go to http://www.os2ecs.net/CTIA2.shtml.

MouseSmart version 1.2 has been released as of 11/08/2002. This allows you to control the acceleration of the mouse cursor. Go to http://www.dialogenhancer.com/.

CDMagic version 2.3 has been released as of 11/06/2002. It has many audio, database, and CD cover functions, including MP3 and CDDB support. Go to http://www.cdmagic.de/.

The Netlabs EPM Distribution has been released as of 11/06/2002. It extends the functionality of EPM (the Enhanced Editor that comes with OS/2 or eComStation). Go to http://nepmd.netlabs.org/.

The VIA Technologies KT133/266/333 CPU cooling & power management tools for VIA 8233 motherboards have been updated as of 11/20/2002. Use search key 8233cool on Hobbes.

XWorkplace version 1.0.0 has been released as of 11/24/2002. This was part of Gary Granat's series on Seeking Ways to Get Rid of System Bloat. This version fixes some bugs and gives you a few new features as well, such as folder split views similar to Windows Explorer. It requires WarpIn to install (see below). NOTE: This version will not work on Warp 3; if you use Warp 3, stick with version 0.9.20.

WarpIn version 1.0.0 has been released as of 11/24/2002. This is an open-source PM installer / uninstaller, that can also install quietly through environmental variables. A number of bug fixes and new features are included. Go to http://www.xworkplace.org/proj_warpin.html.

MMIOProc codecs for FLAC, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis have been updated as of 11/22/2002. They are at versions 0.1.1, 0.4.1, and 0.3, respectively. With these codecs, the OS/2 multimedia system is able to play (and convert to .WAV) FLAC, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis files without any additional software. Guiffy, which was presented at the Feb. 2002 SCOUG general meeting, is now at version 4.7 as of 11/21/2002. It is a file compare / merge (diff-like) tool with a GUI implemented in Java. Go to http://www.guiffy.com/.

MR/2 ICE has been updated to version 2.35 as of 11/15/2002. This program supports both e-mail and news. Go to http://www.mr2ice.com/mr2ice.htm.

MozTweak version 1.2 beta has been released as of 11/15/2002. This is a GUI tool for modifying hidden Mozilla preferences. Go to http://mozillapl.mozdev.org/.

jSyncManager is now open-source as of 10/25/2002. It is the most popular Palm handheld sync solution for Java. Go to http://jsyncmanager.sourceforge.net/.

InJoy version 3.0 beta has been updated as of 11/19/2002. It supports IPSec, the standard for inter-connected, secure networking devices, and the predominant technology in Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Go to http://www.fx.dk/beta/.

InJoy Firewall version 3.0 beta has been updated as of 11/19/2002. This runs on a computer with an Internet connection and acts as an Internet Gateway for other computers on your private LAN. The product is designed for LAN-to-LAN configurations, including the many new cable modem and DSL installations. It features: PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet), support of the interoperable IPSec VPN standard, NDIS Protocol Engine, NAT support (RFC 1631-style Network Address Translation), direct Internet access for your LAN PC's, no reconfiguration on other machines, PM version, link monitoring with statistics and alerting, support for filter and firewall plugins, identd support, priority setting, and lots of bug fixes. AiR-BOOT is now at version 0.94b (Release Candidate 4) as of 11/27/2002. It is a multi-boot partition loader with some extra features, including colored "Award-like" SETUP, virus protection, Linux kernel support, and more. CW-Multimedia classes version 0.2.4 were released on 11/29/2002. These classes are for seamless integration of the MMIO procedures for MP3 and Ogg Vorbis files; after installation, Ogg Vorbis and MP3 files are treated the same way by the WPS as the other audio files, with icons and menus. There is also a new Media Folder, which plays any audio class known to OS/2. Use search key cw-mmclasses on Hobbes, or go to http://www.os2world.com/cdwriting/mmclasses/mmclassesmain.htm.
