News flash on WarpZilla/Mozilla (the successor to Netscape 4.61):
IBM has released as of 03/30/2001 their branded version of Mozilla, based on Netscape version 6.01 and called it "IBM Web Browser". However: It is only available for those who have a current Software Choice subscription. Go to http://www-4.ibm.com/software/os/warp/browser/.

The WarpZilla team has released 2 versions of Mozilla without a spell-checker and the IBM branding. Go to ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/warpzilla/. The version based on Mozilla 0.6 is mozilla-i386-pcos2-vacpp-0.6.zip; the version based on Mozilla 0.8.1 is mozilla-i386-pcos2-vacpp-0.8.1.zip.

The XFree86/OS2 version of Warpzilla has been updated to version 0.8 as of 03/08/2001. Use search key XWarpzilla on Hobbes.

Updates from last month's column:

cdrecord version 1.10a16 is now available as of 03/10/2001. This has the capability of burning single-session, multi-session, or audio CD's. Use search key cdrecord on Hobbes.

An OS/2 port of cdrdao 1.1.5 alpha 2 has been released as of 03/10/2001. It is a free CD-R/RW writing program for Disk At Once mode. Use search key cdrdao on Hobbes.

The stable version of Apache is now at 1.3.19 as of 02/26/2001. Go to http://apache.org/dist/binaries/os2/. Info on Apache is at http://silk.apana.org.au/apache/. The "in-development" version is now at version 2.0.14 as of 03/14/2001, for those who want to try out the new features. It offers big performance improvements due to multi- threading and elimination of some emx dependencies. Go to http://silk.apana.org.au/apache/apache_v2.shtml.

OS2UNIX version 1.4 has been released as of 03/06/2001. This tool allows you to easily compile software for OS/2 from Linux source code without needing autoconf. Go to http://www2s.biglobe.ne.jp/~vtgf3mpr/os2unix/os2unix.htm.

There is an Enhanced E editor (basically E.EXE with the ability to print, among a few other enhancements). It is now at version 2 as of 03/31/2001. Go to http://www.pillarsoft.net/enhanced.html.

InCharge, the financial management system, has been updated as of 03/09/2001 to version 1.02.71. Go to http://www.spitfiresoftware.com/.

UPS Monitor has been updated as of 03/07/2001 to version 1.2a. It will monitor the status of an APC UPS, and provide shutdown services to the operating system. Go to http://home.att.net/~ASchw/upsmonitor.html.

Given that Stardock has dropped support for Object Desktop on OS/2 as of 02/01/2001, an anonymous person has made an unofficial Object Desktop FixKit #4 available on Hobbes as of 03/04/2001. Use search key od20fk. All modifications were made directly on the binaries, so things that can be done are very limited. Also the anonymous author has the disclaimer of "use at your own risk", and that it is not supported by Stardock.

CD Boot/2 version 1.2 has been released as of 03/04/2001. This is a utility to enhance bootable OS/2 CD-ROMs so that when the CD-ROM is inserted into the drive, a menu is displayed allowing you to continue booting from the removeable media, or timing out to the hard drive instead. PMMail has been updated as of 02/27/2001 to beta version 2.20.2200. It contains some bug fixes, and now allows SMTP authentication. Go to http://www.pmmail2000.com/betas/. The file is PMM220.EXE (as there are Windows versions of PMMail as well).

Ogg Vorbis beta 4 has been ported to OS/2 as of 02/27/2001. It is an audio compression format similar to MP3, but free of patented algorithms and is fully open source. Go to http://silk.apana.org.au/vorbis/.

Tonigy version 1.1 has been released as of 03/25/2001. It is an audio CD IFS (installable file system) that maps tracks of audio CD's into .WAV or .RAW files. Use it to access audio tracks just like ordinary files. Go to http://www.defgroup.com/tonigy/.

UpdCD (a.k.a. cdupd) is now at version 1.5 as of 04/01/2001. It now has support for Amouse, SMP, HPFS386, UDF file system, Object Desktop 2.0, Symbios SCSI drivers, and Warp 3 support. Also has an improved Warp Server for e-Business procedure. UpdCD allows you to incorporate public FixPaks and other components into your Warp 4 or Warp Server for e-Business install CD. This allows you to install a Y2K-compliant Warp 4 or Warp Server for e-Business on systems with large hard drives right from this CD. The SoundBlaster 16/AWE32/AWE64 driver package that was previously released by Daniel Caetano has been updated as of 03/04/2001 with REXX support. Go to http://www.os2world.com/sound/SB16AWE32AWE64v19rexxBETA.zip.

SciTech Display Doctor beta 39 has been released as of 03/08/2001. It adds some new display card support, a number of fixes, and now has version A.088 of the IBM GRADD components. Download it from ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/sdd/beta/os2/; the list of changes is at http://www.scitechsoft.com/sdd2_changes.txt, and the main SciTech page is at http://www.scitechsoft.com/sdd_os2.html.

Daniela Engert has released DaniS506 version 1.3.8 as of 03/18/2001. Use search key danis on Hobbes.

IBM has updated some drivers on the DDPak site: 1) The IDEDASD driver has been updated as of 03/14/2001, although it appears to be primarily a documentation update (according to Steve Wendt). 2) A driver for the internal 56K Lucent modem, which is used on some ThinkPads, has been released as of 03/06/2001. 3) There is a driver for the Iomega parallel port-attached ZIP drives as of 03/22/2001. However, this is a beta version of the driver. Find all of these (and more) at http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/html/.

IBM has updated the drivers for the Intel PRO/100 Ethernet cards in the ThinkPad T20/T21 series. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/. The driver and README begin with eftpnteo. HOWEVER: according to the IBM web page, it says it will extract to your hard drive, but you need Windows 9x, NT, or Windows 2000 to do the extraction.

IBM has released as of 03/27/2001 new drivers for the TrackPoint and CardBus on various ThinkPad models. Go to ftp://ftp.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/os2ddpak/.

IBM Japan has a new driver as of 03/06/2001 for Epson printers. It supports the Epson Stylus Color 670, 680, 777, 880, and 980; it may work on other models as well. Go to ftp://ftp.jp.ibm.com/pub/pspj/os2ddpak/printers/.

Video drivers for the S3 Savage series of cards are now at version 7.00.29 as of 03/25/2001. It supports the Savage3D, Savage4, Savage2000, SavageMX/IX, ProSavagePM133/KM133, and SuperSavage. Use search key savage on Hobbes.


This month's new listings - Applications:

If you have TCP/IP 4.2, IBM has 2 updates to fix FTP ASCII transfers and Trap E errors that were occurring for dial-up users (especially with InJoy). Go to ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/tcpip/fixes/v4.2os2/. The FTP fix (as of 02/27/2001) is in the ic27860 directory; the Trap E fix (as of 03/14/2001) is in the ic27255 directory.

IBM has released as of 03/29/2001 the HTTP Server for those who have a valid Software Choice subscription for Warp Server for e-Business. This is a web server based on Apache, which provides support for SSL using 128-bit encryption, and a loadable module that enables you to use it with WebSphere 3.02. Lotus has released Domino Server version 5.0.7 update for OS/2. Go to http://www.notes.net/qmrdown.nsf/QMRWelcome.

There is a beta version of eStyler Lite as of 03/17/2001. It is a "lite" version of Styler/2 (reviwed by Gary Granat in the July 2000 OS/2 For You). It features enhanced titlebars & push-buttons, Windows 9x key support, and enhanced shutdown. There is a catch: it only works on eComStation. Go to http://space.tin.it/scienza/acantato/files/.

Styler/2 has been updated to version 1.6.3 as of 03/05/2001. You can find it on Hobbes with search key smw. For more info, see Steve Wendt's writeup at http://www.os2bbs.com:80/os2news/OS2Files.html.

CDMagic version 0.994 has been released. It has many audio, database, and CD cover functions, including MP3 and CDDB support. Go to http://www.cdmagic.de/.

For those of you who use ZOC: there is a version 3.95 beta available as of 03/22/2001. Go to ftp://ftp.ger.emtec.com/zoc/beta/.

Audio/Data-CD-Creator version 0.46 is available as of 02/25/2001. It is a folder class for the WPS which works as a front-end for cdrecord/2 for creating audio and data CD's. Just put wavefiles or data into this folder and press "write". Arbitrary ordering of files is possible via drag-and-drop. Inkjet Utils version 0.21 has been released as of 03/18/2001. It can be used to clean and align the printer heads on Epson and some HP ink- jet printers. Use search key inkjet on Hobbes.

CoolFM version 1.2 has been released as of 03/17/2001. This is a powerful FM radio tuner control program, compatible with most popular FM tuners. Go to http://os2.ru/projects/coolfm/.

TiMidity MCD has been released as of 03/16/2001. It plays MIDI and Module (.MOD) files via software, rather than relying on your sound card's capabilities. The MCD is a special version that installs as part of OS/2 Multimedia so that most applications that played MIDI files thru your soundcard before will now play MIDI's through TiMidity at a higher quality. NetBeans version 3.2 is now in beta as of 03/13/2001. (The current production version is 3.1 as of 01/22/2001). It is a Java IDE written in pure Java. The IDE is based on JFC, and uses its' full feature set. Full information and download is at http://www.netbeans.org.

Jikes version 1.13 has been released as of 03/10/2001. It is a high- performance Java byte-code compiler. It is much faster than JAVAC, has better dependency checking, and has stricter error checking. Use search key jikes on Hobbes.

A beta version of gphoto2 was released on 03/27/2001. There are now 112 cameras supported; check the list to see if your camera is on the list. Go to ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gphoto/.

A patch that allows Win-OS2 to look like Object Desktop 2.0 has been released as of 03/08/2001. This is a modified seamless Win-OS2 screen driver that will work with any GRADD-based video driver. Use search key od20w on Hobbes.

Normalize version 0.5.2 has been ported to OS/2 as of 03/08/2001. It is an overly complicated tool (according to Steve Wendt) for adjusting the volume of wave files to a standard volume level. This is useful for things like creating MP3 mixes, where different recording levels on different albums can cause the volume to vary greatly from song to song. Use search key normal on Hobbes.

If you like playing Solitaire: there is a game called Sea Haven Towers version 3.01 as of 03/04/2001. It is freeware available at Hobbes with search key seahaven. It is written by J. Daniel Kulp (of Mesa 2 fame).

Psion OS/2 Utilities version 1.0 has been released as of 03/02/2001. They are text mode ftp-like utilities for the Psion handhelds. Go to ftp://cbs-edu.chel.su/pub/Porro/Psion/.

DSK4PMA version 4.19 has been released as of 02/24/2001. It is a PM utility to build diskettes from IBM's *.DSK-format files (such as FixPaks). Go to http://dvalot.free.fr/emtcopy.htm.

MGL 5.0 beta 2 is now available as of 01/04/2001. This is a portable graphics library. Go to ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/devel/beta/. More info is at http://www.scitechsoft.com/dp_mgl.html.

SNES9X, the Super Nintendo emulator that Jerry Rash demoed at the March 2001 SCOUG meeting, has been updated to release 7 as of 03/02/2001. It supports windowed graphics using DIVE, full-screen graphics using MGL, stereo sound using DART, joystick support, NVRAM saving for saved games, and fast and accurate emulation. Warp CD-Copy version 2.0 beta has been released as of 03/24/2001. This is a PM-based audio CD-grabber with built-in MP3 encoder. Go to http://www.asua.org.pl/projects/wcdda/.

EMX 0.9d fix 04 has been released as of 03/21/2001. This is a complete package for programmers; users only need emxrt.zip. These Unix- compatability libraries are required for XFree86/OS2, Quake for OS/2, and countless OS/2 utilities. As Steve Wendt says, "you're going to need this library sooner or later". C-Side version 4 has been released as of 02/25/2001. It is a CD-label and cover designer. Go to http://inet.uni2.dk/~kimfoder/C-SIDE.HTM.

KidStreet version 1 has been released as of 03/30/2001. As the name implies, it is an educational program for children. It currently has spelling and math; more is planned once the author (Wayne Swanson, swanee@pillarsoft.net) gets more feedback. Go to http://www.pillarsoft.net/kidstreet.html.

MIDI Station Sequencer version 3.0 beta 1 is now available. It is a 16-channel, multi-track sequencer that uses the Real-Time MIDI subsystem to communicate with a MIDI keyboard. New features include a brand-new audio engine, full audio editing, and complete audio sequencing. Go to http://www.geocities.com/Hodges_C/mseqv30b1.zip.

z! version march28alpha has been released as of 03/28/2001. It is a text-mode MP3 player that can handle streaming audio (Shoutcast). Go to http://dink.org/z/.

PMView, the indispensable graphics viewer, has been updated to version 2.2 as of 03/27/2001. There are some bug fixes. Go to http://www.pmview.com/.

LAME version 3.88 has been ported to OS/2 as of 03/26/2001. It is an MP3 encoder, and includes a graphical frame analyzer. Use search key lame on Hobbes.
