Historical Duck -- Webfoot profile

On the web, content is king. Far more important than glitzy graphics, content makes people come back again and again.

Let's see how this month's chosen web sites measure up:

Ratings
Info
Content Links Glitz Type Site (url) and Comments
A+ A+ B- Music OS/2 Music Software (http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/os2/).  The Shareware Music Machine supports OS/2.  CDs, audio, MIDI, recording and editing, synthesizers, hundreds of OS/2 titles.
A   A   B- Database The mSQL PC Home Page (http://blnet.com/msqlpc/).  Eagle-eyed Duck checks Links again, decides there's plenty.  The "Tutorials" page can take you to an education in SQL, and there's a full complement of mailing lists to join.
A+ B   B- Computers The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/).  We like to read a nice trashy paper every once in a while.  This one's about our industry.  Oooh, check the sidebar.
A   C   B   Hardware Intel Chipsets (http://developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/linecard.htm).  It's not the processor on your motherboard, bubba, it's the chipset that makes everything work right.  See this chart.
B+ B   A+ OS/2 Pete's OS/2 Warp Home Page (http://web2.airmail.net/engstrv/index.html).  The unique animated logo makes this site worth a visit.  His "News & Information Links" intertwine OS/2 with general life and he's got a few opinions to boot.
A   D   B   Software Christoph Bratschi's Homepage (http://www.datacomm.ch/~cbratschi/english/).  Christoph's home-built OS/2 software, including his latest file browser release (complete with screenshots) and his Mixomat Sound Mixer software which supports and controls Soundblaster cards.
B- B   C- Chemistry Chemistry and OS/2 (http://www.geocities.com:80/CapeCanaveral/Launchpad/7835/chemistryandOS2.html).  The Duck's pal Doug was a chemist back in college.  Doug made extra bucks creating "special stuff" in his dorm room, but of course no one would use these programs for that kind of activity.
B+ C+ D   Programming Pipes for NetRexx and Java (http://www.cam.org/~tomlins/njpipes.html).  Too technical for The Duck, so it must be valuable.
C   D+ B+ User group Toronto OS/2 User's Group (http://www.to2.org/).  Nice home page showcases their interests and those OS/2 vs Linux and Windows showdowns look verrry interesting!  Now, if they'll just update their web pages . . . and lose those pdf newsletters.
D   D   A- Video SciTech Display Doctor For OS/2 (http://www.scitechsoft.com/sdd_os2.html).  These guys need a good focus group to tell them what's wrong with their site.  The product might be a good one, and if they'd describe it better this Duck could quack about its benefits.

This month's Duck Feather

For daily news about OS/2 you need four bookmarks in your browser.

Warpcast (http://www.warpcast.com/) displays the latest press releases and news submissions in an easy-to-peruse headline format, with mailing list signups available for personal delivery.

And, the two News And Rumors sites are outstanding.  Steve Wendt (http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/) displays both news and new file releases on his web page, and does a fast rewrite of lengthy submissions so you get the news quick.  Loren Bandiera (http://www.os2ss.com/news/) puts every word on his web page so you won't miss a thing, and date stamps his entries.  Both are unique and updated daily.

Finally, the newsgroup comp.os.os2.announce (news:comp.os.os2.announce) often carries some tidbits that the other sources don't.  It seems to get a bit more attention from the international crowd.
