SCOUG OS/2 For You - May 1999

Internet Happenings

by Dave Watson

Planet OS/2

Many of us are missing the boat! There are thousands of active OS/2 fans out there. Warpstock is just the tip of the iceberg. And if you are a student of history, you will recall that it was an iceberg that brought down the "unsinkable" Titanic! (...if you catch my drift!)

We have begun using a popular Internet feature called Internet Relay Chat (IRC) for weekly meetings. We have missed many of you at these meetings. If you drop by, you will find a great number of interesting and useful discussions are ongoing just about all the time.

Getting connected is easy. Details? Go to the SCOUG web site (www.scoug.com) and click on SIGs, Internet SIG, Chat (or http://users.deltanet.com/users/dwatson/irc/ for short) to find out all about it. On the chat page is a primer on how to easily get and use the software, and of SCOUG activities.

We currently have weekly meetings at 7 PM Pacific time on Mondays (help desk) and Wednesdays (Internet SIG), and are planning to add more forums.

There's Always More

Also, we're expanding the chat web site to include activities of other groups.

VOICE is a very important organization in the OS/2 community. They are a "virtual organization" with members throughout North America and the Caribbean, as well as Europe, Asia and Australia! They have an excellent web site including high quality monthly newsletters at www.os2voice.org.

They are also big advocates of IRC and have many scheduled and unscheduled meetings and events. One of these is on Tuesdays at 5 PM Pacific, called Speakup. They have invited many distinguished guests such as our own Rollin and Randell. Membership is $25, but most of their activities are available free on the web and chat facilities.

Another OS/2 group with a strong Internet presence meets on the IRC network called undernet. They are dedicated OS/2'ers with a charter that declares consorting with certain "other" operating systems to be a capital offense. I'm not aware that they have carried out convictions or sentencing for this offense, but their dedication and energy are obvious. Learn more about them at their web site at www.warpchannel.iceflow.net.

I'll discuss more about IRC activities in the future. The OS/2 forums are as useful as they are exciting. Please join us!

Is there a Warpdoctor in the house?

Soon. VOICE is working on resurrecting the Warp Pharmacy, an excellent compendium of how-to articles for using OS/2. It's a community project and needs your help! Please join the mailing list at mailer.falcon-net.net:8080/quest/RemoteListSummary/warpdoctor.
