SCOUG OS/2 For You - February 1999

Programming SIG Goals for 1999

by Rollin White

The Programming SIG has an exciting year ahead. As we've discussed in recent meetings, there are a variety of topics that we will be examining.

  • Java 1.2 has been released by SUN, so we should expect a beta from IBM for OS/2 before too long. There are a ton of changes in Java 1.2 and other Java technologies. We'll look at some of them in great detail and others at a high level.

  • There's also been interest in studying OS/2 device drivers. Hopefully we can convince one of our SIG members to share his knowledge on the subject.

  • Terry's presentation on Visual Age for C++ has sparked some interest in development environments. We may examine some of the Java IDEs and other development environments.

  • We will look at EPM. It has great potential as a programmer's editor with its macro language. We will also solicit short demonstrations of other editors that members have used.

  • Later in the year we'll look into the details of Workplace Shell programming. Using the WPS you can develop programs that integrate seamlessly with the desktop. But, developing and debugging those programs can be a challenge.

  • We will try to review Win32-OS/2 when it is next updated. There have been some significant architectural changes to the project, so it will be interesting to study their impact.

  • Using REXX in OS/2 applications can be a powerful tool for developers. Leveraging a full function application can help you create solutions very quickly.

  • And there has been discussion of developing a project to help support the on-line efforts of SCOUG and our SIGs. This could be an IRC project, or it could be something broader.

  • Finally, at our December meeting we'll examine the Y2K problem.
