SCOUG OS/2 For You - June 1998

Internet SIG Happenings

by Dave Watson

Well, we have all heard by now that the Internet is becoming a major force in all our lives. It has even become the focus of the latest battleground between a whole bunch of governments and some software vendor up in Washington state, disputing how that company will market its web browser. In the May Internet SIG meeting we had lots of rousing discussion on this and other big events in the Internet universe. We also began a survey of methods and tools for searching for information on the net, and continued our discussions of encryption tools. Learn about these and other useful and amusing topics at the ISIG web site (http://users.deltanet.com/dwatson/isig.html, or link from www.scoug.com).

Or, come to the next ISIG meeting and learn about these fascinating topics first hand! We'll be looking at one of the first useful "write-once-run-anywhere" Java programs - the J Street Mailer from the folks who brought OS/2 users the great Post Road Mail program. (Yes, it will be Java, not judges, that will reduce Microsoft Corp to a historical footnote!) We'll look at some of the new alternative web browsers, continue our investigations of Internet data searching and encryption, and discuss some of the latest news and events. And, of course, we'll have some of the finest cookies you ever saw!

Come join us at the OCIPUG SIG Complex, June 15th, 7pm, and the third Monday of every month. Note that this is the first meeting to come before the monthly SCOUG meeting, so mark your calendar!

Contact Dave Watson, dwatson@deltanet.com if you have questions or comments.
