SCOUG OS/2 For You - January 1998

It's that time of year again. SCOUG elections for the board of directors and officer positions are held in March. Besides $28 for membership, SCOUG doesn't ask much of its members. But, I do ask that you give some serious thought to the elections. If you think you are capable of serving as a board member, please step forward.

Even if you don't think you're board material, you do have some thoughts about what you want out of SCOUG in 1998. Let the existing - and more importantly - the future board know.

The Positions

In next month's newsletter we'll spell out the more formal definitions of each elected position. For now, I'll offer my opinion of what each role requires.

President - manages and directs the board of director's meetings as well as SCOUG's general activities. Paying attention to detail without losing sight of the big picture is an important skill of the President.

Vice President - can be one of the easiest officer positions or one of the most challenging. The Vice President has the luxury of helping the President by throwing himself at particular projects or committees.

Secretary - must maintain the club's records as well as take the minutes of the directors' meetings.

Treasurer - collects and records all income and expenses for the club. Producing informative reports of the club's financial activities is another important responsibility.

SCOUG also elects five directors at large. Each director should be willing to work hard to help the club achieve its goals. For example, functions such as our Open House and Warpstock require input and help from all nine directors. Directors will also take on particular projects - such as designing and having the SCOUG banner made.

All of the director roles are both demanding and rewarding. I've worked with volunteer organizations such as SCOUG for most of my life. That work has created some of the best friendships and exciting experiences.
