SCOUG OS/2 For You - January 1998

Edwin Black Makes A Large Donation to SCOUG!

Often controversial and colorful former OS/2 Professional magazine publisher Edwin Black has generously donated a number of items to SCOUG. He's given us a large number of rare (and not-so-rare) back issues of OS/2 Professional, including the infamous Borg issue, as well as hotel accommodations in Oakland (see below). Most of the magazines will be given to SCOUG members, and the hotel accommodations will be used to raise money for SCOUG.

In addition, Black is donating a number of other items, including software and memorabilia, that will be arriving soon. Our thanks and hats-off to the most generous Edwin Black!

Going to Oakland before the first of July? SCOUG can help.

You can stay at the downtown Oakland Marriott for half price courtesy of SCOUG and Edwin Black.

SCOUG now has a $1,000 credit at the hotel. To raise money for new raffle prizes, SCOUG's Board of Directors has decided to "sell" the credit to members. For each dollar given to SCOUG, you'll receive two dollars of credit at the hotel. This can be used for all hotel charges, not just the room. The only hitch is that the credit must be used before July 1st, 1998.

Interested? Tell Paul Wirtz (call 714-998-3510, email pwirtz@apc.net, or talk to him at the meeting). After the Jan. raffle, we'll have a drawing to determine the order in which people can buy some of the credit. The first name drawn will be the first to buy (however much they want), and then the next person buys what he wants, and so on until it's gone. For example, if the first person wants $250 of credit, they'll pay SCOUG $125; then the second name drawn can buy $500 for $250, and the third the final $250 for $125. If you want to participate in this opportunity, but won't be at the meeting, be sure to tell Paul how much of the credit you want when you contact him.

Exact details on how to use the credit will be available at the meeting. Meanwhile, some information about the hotel might be useful:

Marriott Oakland City Center
1001 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94607
phone 510-451-4000

Rates vary, so you will want to contact the hotel for prices.
