Subject: SCOUG-Programming: Need help selecting DB2

Content Type: text/plain

I know absolutely nothing about IBM's DB2
(http://www.software.ibm.com/data/), and I need some help in selecting
from the various DB2 packages available.

First, I'm assuming:
- It's a database, like dBase or :) dbExpert.
- I can use it on a standalone OS/2 machine.
- I can use it on a network server.
- I can write programs in C++ and Java that will access it.
- I'd be "really cool" if I used it.

I'd like to buy a copy of DB2 to learn more about it and to use it in my
modest business environment.

Indelible Blue lists the following DB2 packages (SRP$ shown):
$25,000 DB2 OLAP Server Enterprise Edition V1 Multiplatform
999 DB2 Universal Developer's Edition V5
295 DB2 Personal Developer's Edition V5
999 DB2 UDB Workgroup Edition V5
7,999 DB2 UDB Enterprise Edition V5
369 DB2 UDB Personal Edition V5
1,945 DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition V5
299 DB2 Connect Personal Edition V5

The IBM website isn't any help at all in comparing these versions
(unless I missed the comparison page).

QUESTIONS: What is the difference between:
- the "Developer's", "UDB" and "Connect" versions?
- the "UDB Personal" and "UDB Workgroup" editions?
- The "Personal Developer's" and "Universal Developer's" editions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Peter Skye
