He's right. IMO, you design a solution and then pick the best language
for the job. Most folks just use what they know.

I have a similar approach. My pick order for text processing is
approximately:

grep/cut
sed
awk
perl
C/C++

I add complexity as needed to get the processing speed/features I need. I
am tending to use Perl more often lately for jobs that sed could do
because it's easy to make perl run in "sed" mode. I use 4OS2 so I can run
perl scripts (and sed and awk) from the command line without wrappers,
similar to unix #! executables.
