I know nothing about Vonage. One of my sons (he lives in Missouri) tried VOIP
(I don't think it was Vonage) and because of bad service went back to a normal
phone.

If they don't have the options to do it properly then you will need to put it
after the router or change to a different VOIP provider.

I doubt that there would be much of a security risk with the Vonage equipment
behind the router, you just need to check If the Vonage equipment will work
behind a router.
