No, just for the purpose of cloning.

Yes, opticals. The chipsets in the USB ext. cases for
them are pretty bad, for the most part.

I've done it extensively, in the case of single
partition backups. If the image is good, it can be
accessed from wherever and so restored. Under about
4.4G, you could put it on a DVD. Otherwise, you'd
park it on a HDD somewhere.
