This would seem to be the case. I recommend you pick the address you want
to use and let's get back to some iptrace testing.
For the DNS lookups that fail, try a similar lookup from the command line.
For example
nslookup smtp.roadrunner.net

They are invented names which ensure that sendmail knowns that my network
is not local to earthlink.net. Without this, there are cases where
sendmail will try to do a local delivery, which will never work.
