It depends on the group, but I can tell you that Pac 
Bell (then SBC, and now in its AT&T incarnation) news 
servers have some of the WORST retention I've seen.  I 
mean, it can be laughable -- easily as bad as what you 
describe, maybe worse. 
What about that guy up in Canada, Jack (Troughton ?).  
Didn't he arrange some alternate newsgroup coverage 
for the OS/2 stuff ?  This was initially (in part) to 
filter out the flames and B.S. emanating from one 
notorious nutjob, but I would think his retention 
would be one of the best ?  I have his servers 
bookmarked, but not in a way that's handy at this 
particular moment.
