Interesting. I'm seen crummy looking font rendering when generating PDFs
from documents with TrueType fonts, but never lines. I have seen lines
from Mesa when it does a poor job of shrink to fine for TrueType fonts.
May you were having this problem.

FWIW, I make sure to use Postscript font for documents destined for PDFs.
