I do all HDD maintenance while booted from a DOS floppy.  I am current   
on DFSEE but use Partition Magic 6 for most everything.  FAT32   
partitions made that way have always worked under W98 and OS/2.  I do   
tend to keep them under 50G so I don't have a lot of experience with   
larger partitions.  
 
Creating a backup drive as a single extended and then dividing it into   
logicals makes it more "portable".
