Subject: SCOUG-Help: That's better! eCS 1.2 Install on Dell PC

Content Type: text/plain

With hardware, information, and suggestions gathered over the past few
days, I did another install of eCS 1.2 yesterday. I had already added a
second hard drive, and I also added an Intel PRO/1000 MT Ethernet card,
even though I'm pretty certain I could have made the integrated Ethernet
chipset work.

This time, I knew what to say in the Network portion of the install, so
I let eCS install that part, too.

And, when all was done, I was able to open Mozilla and get right to
www.mozilla.org.

Now, I'm down to three items before I have the new PC working:
1. I have no sound. I downloaded the latest UNIAUD, and copied that
onto the PC. The UNIAUD driver and the Sound Blaster card both show up
during boot, but when I finally get a desktop, sounds are missing, even
though system sounds are enabled. (I'm getting sounds under WinXP, and
I haven't touched the speakers or the connection.) What should I look
at to figure out what's wrong?

2. SNAP Graphics doesn't know the video card (ATI Radeon X300 SE), and
is only using 16MB of memory (the card has 128MB). While the desktop
looks fine at 1280 x 1024 with 16M colors, operations like moving or
resizing a window, or scrolling down a PDF page in Acrobat Reader are
jerky, not smooth. I wonder whether I might need to get the SNAP
Graphics 3.0 upgrade, since SciTech's Web site says the X300 series is
supported?

3. My SATA hard drives continue to run very slowly. Booting takes over
20 minutes. On the previous install, running LVM, MPTS, and Selective
Install for Networking all took several minutes to get started, and some
operations I did also took a long time to complete. I haven't yet had
to go into any of these tools with the new install. I'm using the
latest (from Hobbes) DANIS506.ADD and DANIATAP.FLT. Steven suggested
filing a bug report with Daniela Engert, and I'll do that in the next
day or so.

As always, SCOUG's help is appreciated, and your suggestions /
experiences will be welcome.
Colin
