There was some discussion of some problems with a different ThinkPad and  
the Soundmax driver on the uniaud-user list.  I didn't see a resolution,  
or a final trace of the problem, but there was some speculation that it  
might have something to do with the fat32 driver.  You might try a  
different version, or check the fat32 support lists.
