I just had some emails bounce back -- apparently for want of SMTP  
authentication (which I am totally unfamiliar with) -- but they were sent  
from NS 4.61, where I still have all my mail.  (Go ahead and laugh, but The  
Duck is still using 2.02 for this . . . . )  If this is in fact a vital  
item these days, hopefully Mozilla mail will provide for it ?

This surprises me.  I had thought Polarbar was supposed to have much more  
recent -- and *ongoing* -- development.
