>From the "More interesting clues dept":  
 
 I remmed out com.sys drivers, and unremmed the SIO drivers.  On reboot,  
usbser.sys showed as COM1.  No change in status of card, but removing  
card, and inserting card both caused COM2 to flicker with irqmon.  Mdoe  
com1 didn't give an error, and mode com2 showed "The drive is not ready"/
