You can log on directly to an accepting mail server and send mail
to its users, or to anyone else if it allows relaying. It is a
major spam-enabling mechanism, so many ISPs now disallow it, forcing
you to use their own mail servers via which various algorithms
reduce or eliminate emission of spam. This is important for some
ISPs to prevent their being blacklisted.
