Wait.  You don't have _any_ Desktop, or you don't have your own personal  
customized loved-by-Mark Desktop?  
 
If you have a Desktop, why can't you just copy the subdirectories from a  
backup into the new desktop directory?  I've fiddled with the desktop  
directory and don't recall zapping anything.
