Yes -- that was the problem! 
I reedited the DWord and I was able to install (at least partially) Open 
Office. At least it completed what it was doing without a trap error this 
time. Hooray for that. 
I still don't see any executable files for starting Open Office, so I may 
have to go back and try reinstalling again. But first, I want to read the 
docs a little more thoroughly.
