Hello everyone:

Well, I finished the installation of ECS 1.1. I took about 1-1/2 hours, most of which was reading instructions and deciding on alternative choices.

I was not able to get the system to read the registration data from a diskette. Wouldn't do that. There were really no instructions on exactly how do to it (how to put the data on a diskette). Had to write in all the registration stuff manually during the install.

I installed the IBM performance IDE drivers. Did not take a chance on Dani's drivers. Will change my system to her drivers later. Also, I used the IBM COM.SYS driver instead of the SIO.SYS one. ECS properly detected my Adaptec SCSI system.

On phase 1 of the install my system hung at the APM.SYS loading. I rebooted, using the installation CD, and got to a commandline. Per the instructions in the booklet, I REM'ed out all 3 instances of APM.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS. Then, per the instructions I copyed the FAQ.TXT document to a diskette, so that I could read it on another computer. I wanted to be able to pick up the installation at the start of phase 1 instead of going back to the beginning. The instructions in the FAQ.TXT did not work. There was no file, E:\...\install\phase1.cmd, on my hard drive. Therefore, I could not use it to restart the phase 1 installation. Nevertheless, I pulled the CD, rebooted, using the hard drive, then put the CD back into the bay before the bootup completed. The system came up and completed the installation, using the CD. I then reinstated the APM.SYS lines in the CONFIG.SYS.

Everything seems to be OK, but I have not tested or seen everything yet.

A couple of questions:

1. How do I set up the system to turn off the motherboard upon shutdown. I know it's there, somewhere in a configuration notebook. I just cannot find it.

2. I have 3 JFS LVM volumes on my first hard disk. Upon bootup the system runs CHKDSK on these 3 volumes everytime. It takes only maybe 10 seconds, but is that the way it's supposed to work? I thought JSF volumes did not need CHKDSK. Is there any way to get it to not run CHKDSK on these JFS volumes?

I'm now going to work to restore my system to something like its past usefulness (install Back Again 2000, Injoy, Norman AV, Mozilla, check for a working Internet connection and File and Print Client, etc.).

Jordan,

Point well taken. SIO 2.00, indeed YMMV. I should have refrained from
stating "included without reservation"; But, will I use SIO 2.00 on any
machine - no. I own one copy of Sio 2.03 professional , possibly two
copies, which I am *not* using. I'll bet you a cup of coffee that the next
released version of eCS will either have SIO 2.03 non-professional version
or else this driver will not be installed as default.

*Most* installs can use the base eCS 1.1 install; ie the dani driver in
performance mode or apparently SIO 2.00 non-professional version.

Based on the prior failed installs of others, I noted that a number of
these had problems with dani and/or sio. Thus when I had problems with my
eCS 1.1 install on the ASUS A7N8X motherboard, I focused my attack on the
failed install on dani and sio. The traps/stalls with sio were scattered,
not always reproducible but were real. The dani performance error on my
system appeared to occur in the network install portion (early in phase
1).

So if one has problems with a base eCS 1.1 install, I suggest first to
look at dani and sio. As well as check the readme files.

As for installing only Java 1.1.8 without other javas, no IBM WebBrowser,
VGA install to minimize the extra components in the base eCS install and
IMO would thus apply to everyone. After the eCS base install, (1) add
whatever the *latest* version of java that you desire; (2) install the
latest Mozilla, Firebird browser version (have this available on a CD or
elsewher on your hard drive); (3) install SNAP (shareware) without having
residual Scitech Display Doctor (SDD) on your hard drive. If no SNAP, you
could simply install SDD, although I have been told that if installing a
performance OS, and eCS is a performance eCS, install VGA first, then
after a complete install use your latest video driver such as the latest
SDD/se available form Serenity.

To me eCS 1.1 install is significantly different and improved from eCS
1.0; I expect the next verion of eCS will again be significantly different
and improved all-around.
