On 3/8/04 I placed an order at tigerdirect.com.
On 3/10/04, I called tigerdirect.com (during business hours) because my
order was being "held". I was transferred to the "credit card department"
where I was asked to verify my identity "please give the last four of your
social security number"; I told the rep that I would not and I saw no
reason why the rep needed the last four of my SSN. The rep placed me on
hold, came back and told me that my order was OK and the order would ship
- I gave the rep no identification other than my name and the order
number.
I reported this to the credit card company.
Scary. Be careful.
