Thanks for the eBay tip. Fry's had them on sale a few months ago and I
get some surveillance catalogs which always mention them.

But monitoring the tapes is a pain. I'd like to have the computer give
me snapshot frames for the moments when motion is detected.

Plus, a computer-based system would allow remote administration. I
wouldn't have to worry about whether or not they were changing the tapes
or actually taking a look at them; I could just download the snapshot
frames.

My very old system in Glendale used two VCRs and two cameras plus a
motion detector from Home Depot (the kind that turns on a light if
something moves). Instead of a light, I used the motion detector to
pause/unpause the VCRs. This worked out nicely because the only video
recorded on the tapes was "activity" and this got around having to
monitor the tapes over long stretches of nothingness.

A quick note: Motion-follow tilt-and-pan heads are handy but I haven't
found them to be worth the extra money.

For lurkers, there are legal ramifications. My understanding is that
you can video your your street but you can't have the video show your
neighbor's front door (my attorney said that would "monitor their
movements and visitors").
