At the Saturday SCOUG meeting there was a short
discussion about SCOUG's MX (Mail eXchanger) record.
(Lurkers: The MX record is part of the Dynamic Name
Server [DNS] database where your software looks up
the target IP address for mail you are sending.)
Here's what I get using Verizon's DNS:
[G:\]nslookup
> set type=mx
> scoug.com
Server: vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net
Address: 4.2.2.1
Non-authoritative answer:
scoug.com preference = 100, mail exchanger = mx2.zoneedit.com
scoug.com preference = 0, mail exchanger = mail.scoug.com
> exit
[G:\]
AFAIK the higher preference value means a higher priority
for the specified MX. If pref=100 means (in this case)
"use this one" then SCOUG mail goes through ZoneEdit.
Bob, what do you get from your DNS? You said at the
meeting that all SCOUG-targeted mail went directly to
the SCOUG mail server and did not go through ZoneEdit.
Does your DNS give you different information than mine?
A quick check of a few of the junk mail headers on the spam
in the SCOUG mail boxes shows that some of the messages came
through ZoneEdit and some came directly to the SCOUG IP.
This is consistent with what I've observed on the SCOUG
server using netstat -s -- some incoming SMTP connections
are from ZoneEdit's two IPs, and some are direct connections
from spammers.
(Lurkers: Someone sending a message can either use
"scoug.com" in which case the software will look up the MX
record and send to the designated [ZoneEdit] SMTP server, or
the sender can use SCOUG's actual IP address [216.184.211.35]
and send directly to the SCOUG SMTP server. ZoneEdit is a
mail relaying/forwarding and http redirection service.)
Here are the current SMTP connections on the SCOUG server:
[-D:\SkyeTool]sr nsds
SMTP . . .
19 STREAM smtp..25 51574 209.152.174.160 ESTABLISH
88 STREAM 0 smtp..25 0.0.0.0 LISTEN
127 STREAM smtp..25 51588 209.152.174.160 ESTABLISH
297 STREAM smtp..25 51627 216.40.250.211 ESTABLISH
1125 STREAM smtp..25 51431 206.14.209.7 ESTABLISH
2035 STREAM smtp..25 51566 209.152.174.160 ESTABLISH
209.152.174.160 and 216.40.174.160 are ZoneEdit, i.e. four
of the current connections are for incoming mail directed
to "scoug.com" and MX-routed through ZoneEdit.
206.14.209.7 is well.com and is probably an incoming message
sent to SCOUG's IP address rather than "scoug.com".
