It's either that or use some non-standard roll your own tool or an
unsupported tool with known defects that will never get fixed.

It's hard to know which end is responsible for the error without some sort
of description of what you used to do the download and how you invoked the
download.
The only downside to the wpi format, IMO, is that not all servers are
correctly configured to treat the wpi format as binary. This can be a
problem when using older browsers that have defects in their MIME type
handling.
My experience is that Warpin is as least as reliable as Software Installer
and Feature Installer and is much easier to novices to use that either of
these.
