This is the default for Mozilla. However, most modern news readers have
the ability to keep local copies of message bodies. This is an option for
Mozilla and is intended to allow offline reading.

This is optional behavior in Mozilla. You can hide the previously read
messages, but they do tend to show up in other display modes.

This be a long time. Especially if you use a newserver like gmane. Their
retention rivals Google groups.
