Yes, that was the real issue I was getting at. More like the notorious cases, such as
certain versions of MusicMatch Jukebox, that periodically (and surreptitiously) "phoned
home" to report where you'd been surfing. According to PC Magazine, a lot of free
software apparently has stuff like this embedded in it -- no doubt as a way for the
developers to recoup their investment from *someone." But, as you noted, these
executables are all going to be of the Windoze variety.

Not really. There has been no shortage of effective methods for dealing with that.
