My hard drive problem seems to be intermittent... maybe it has something to
do with the PCI modem and cdrw I recently added, although I doubt it. After
the machine has been off awhile the HD seems to work for awhile, then it
stops working and the scsi adapter shows a non-sync error on it during
bootup. Today I had it working awhile so I made backups of the partitions on
that drive and I tried a few things on the modem problem:
1. The PCI sniffer that Steven recommended that I use and then compare to
Ray's showed:

Looks about the same to me, just slight difference in Port address and IRQ
on my machine.
2. I tried the PF5 "enable full hardware detection" bootup step that was in
the Actiontec user guide, but the machine appeared to hang with the blue IBM
logo screen up... let it go about 5 minutes, then assumed it was hung and
rebooted the normal way, then did the sniffer shown above.
3. tried Ray's modem settings, but still get the immediate "could not
initialize port" error when I tried to dial using Compuserve CIM with the
com2 setting..... it still looks like something more basic than the modem
command string, I am just not getting to the port.
4. checked com.sys file: I am using the one that came on the modem's cdrom,
dated 2/9/98 @ 18,799 bytes. My old one was dated 8/12/96 @ 18,735 bytes.
I will revert to the original and test with that after I finish this email.
5. Here are the pertinent statements in my config.sys:
    DEVICE=D:\OS2\BOOT\COM.SYS (2,CC00,11)
    DEVICE=D:\OS2\MDOS\VCOM.SYS
So, still no luck getting to the modem.
Suggestions welcomed!
Wayne
BTW, I am attaching the full output from the PCI sniffer to this email.
