Sheridan,
Sorry you had a little bit of bad luck with your hard drive and that you are going to have
to do a little work to restore/rebuilt everything.
I've upgraded/changed a lot of hard drives on my various machines. Only one time did
I have a situation where I HAD to replace a drive. In that particular case, I got a warning
of an imminent hard drive failure every time I booted. I made a complete/full backup
and replaced it within a week.
That being said, I am now a little pessimistic about the quality of hardware that you
purchase over the Internet. In my opinion you can sometimes get a unit that was
momentarily used someone else and then returned (for whatever reason). And if so,
you sometimes get someone else's problems and/or installation screwups! Often
times the unit works OK, but has one or two quirks (startup noise, etc.).
The only way to guard against that is to make sure that you get a factory sealed unit
with the full factory warranty.
