Then you probably are not using one.

I tend to keep resolv and resolv2 in sync. This prevents confusion. The
dialer is going to rewrite resolv2 when you connect.

>My problem is when dialing in to ucsd.edu. If I dial in to pacbell.net, I

This means the DNS lookup is farkled. This can happen for several reasons
when switching between dialup and wired connections. If you look at a
resolv file you will see it contains two pieces of information a domain
name and a list of DNS servers. The domain name is usually not a problem,
but it is best if it contains the domain name of your ISP. The name
servers are important. If they are wrong, you are not going to be able to
resolve domain names to IP addresses and life will be a mess.

Take a look at the resolve files after you make a dialup connection. Make
sure that they contain IP address of the correct DNS servers.

Generally you can use any DNS server, but it's more efficient to use your
ISP's DNS servers because they are closer.

>I start to get lines of garbagey characters and

This is caused by either line noise or a modem that does not hear very
well. It's hard to say which.

>\mptn\etc\resolv = domain ucsd.edu

>\mptn\etc\resolv2 = domain ucsd.edu
>nameserver 137.110.0.26
>nameserver 137.239.1.52

These do not look right:

[D:\TMP]nslookup -type=ns ucsd.edu
Server: rns2.earthlink.net
Address: 207.217.77.82

Non-authoritative answer:
ucsd.edu nameserver = ns1.ucsd.edu
ucsd.edu nameserver = ns2.ucsd.edu
ucsd.edu nameserver = ns0.ucsd.edu
ucsd.edu nameserver = ns1.nosc.mil

Authoritative answers can be found from:
ns0.ucsd.edu internet address = 132.239.1.51
ns1.nosc.mil internet address = 128.49.16.7
ns1.ucsd.edu internet address = 128.54.16.2
ns2.ucsd.edu internet address = 132.239.1.52

You should probably be using one of these name servers. I would check
your Injoy setup.

>Another bit of data: when I switch from one ISP to the other using Injoy,
>I sometimes get a trap 0003 in Module Sockets crash.

There might have been a fix for this. You need to ask on the eCS tcp/ip
support newsgroup.

>I don't know why ucsd.edu worked fine last summer and why it is giving me
>a problem now.

It appears that thy changed name servers.

FWIW:

[D:\TMP]nslookup -type=ns pacbell.net
Server: rns2.earthlink.net
Address: 207.217.77.82

Non-authoritative answer:
pacbell.net nameserver = ns1.pbi.net
pacbell.net nameserver = ns2.pbi.net

Authoritative answers can be found from:
ns1.pbi.net internet address = 206.13.28.11
ns2.pbi.net internet address = 206.13.29.11

Looking at the values you have in resolv*

D:\TMP]nslookup 137.110.0.26
Server: rns2.earthlink.net
Address: 207.217.77.82

Name: dialin.ucsd.edu
Address: 137.110.0.26

D:\TMP]nslookup 137.239.1.52
Server: rns2.earthlink.net
Address: 207.217.77.82

** rns2.earthlink.net can't find 137.239.1.52: Server failed

Finally, dialin.ucsd.edu can be used as a nameserver:

[D:\TMP]nslookup www.eartlink.net 137.110.0.26
Server: dialin.ucsd.edu
Address: 137.110.0.26

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.eartlink.net
Address: 216.65.41.185

but it seems slower to respond than the preferred name servers.

So, basically I'm saying make sure resolv and resolv2 have valid values
and make sure the values supplied by the dialer are also correct.

HTH,

Steven
