Expired?  As in out of warranty or deceased? :-) 
Could be a couple of things.  First thing to try is a commercial CD.  That 
will give you a basic go-no-go on the drive. 
Also, keep in mind that all CD drives are not created equal.  Older drives 
may or may not have problem reading CDRs or CDRWs.  There are a lot of 
variables.  Media reflectivity.  How dusty the lens is.  How good the 
servo circuits are.

Are you saying the Plexwrite can not read the CDs is has written?  That is 
odd.
