I'm using the similar (I think) 170X (J4102B). I set it up without
HP's software. You can access the internal java setup program
via http://192.168.1.x for example. The bidirectional feature
makes it work with my HP LJ 1220 printer/scanner under Win98.
Other, cheaper print servers I've got are not bidirectional
so the scan-to-pc part didn't work there, although the scanner
functions adequately as a one-page copier.

There's a test button on the back of the print server which prints
a configuration page and is also VERY useful for resetting to
factory defaults when/if necessary. Otherwise, it can be very difficult
to set up if you don't know what IP it was configured for originally.

My OS/2 printing has been very limited, but seemed to work OK,
once I figured out how to get network printing working.

IBM has a free LPR Remote Printing client (instlpr.exe, 816K)
(needed for Win98) that I use with the TP600E laptop. I've not
yet put OS/2 on the laptpop.
