If you are responding to someone asking for help who
may not be a member of this list, be sure to use the
REPLY TO ALL feature of your email program.

Hiya Jeff,
You pinged a dotted IP address. You need to ping a domain name, so that
PING will first go to the DNS to "resolve" the domain to its dotted IP
address.
You can't do this test with NSLOOKUP because nslookup _always_ goes to
the DNS, either to look up a domain's dotted IP address _or_ to look up
a dotted IP address's domain name. Thus, if the DNS isn't working,
nslookup will always fail.
PING will work one way but not the other if the DNS isn't responding,
thus it's a quick way to see if your DNS is working. I prefer PING
rather than using telnet/smtp/http for this test because PING just
checks if the target TCP/IP stack is working and doesn't care if there's
an appropriate server running on the target machine. There are a few
sites which block ping requests but in general it works quite nicely.
