I have had systems freeze when the INI files had not been cleaned in a   
long time. Have you run CHECKINI or CLEANINI lately?  
 
You should be able to get a definitive answer as to your sound hardware   
from the PCI sniffer. Look for PCI048VKA.zip on hobbes. It's a DOS   
program, but it will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about   
your hardware!
