Adaptec calls this their Speedflex technology.  It does require that the  
SE and LVD devices be on separate cables, which means you can't mix and  
match LVD/SE devices on the external cable and get full speed from both.  
 
I could use it with my setup, but I've decided to keep the 2940UW  
installed for now because it allows me to keep more devices active,  
concurrently.
