Hey Jack,
I use InJoy for dialup and use Dial-on-Demand to connect with timeout/hangup
setup to disconnect after 12 minutes of inactivity. The Dial-on-Demand always
works but occasionally the disconnect doesn't. It's not consistent but I've
watched the countdown timer a couple of times when it was happening. There was
a periodicity to the countdown timer resetting, like every 30 seconds. I think
I tried to trace it but it didn't turn up anything (but I may not have done it
right - I didn't pursue it deeply). Once, I changed the access number of my ISP
that I was favoring and it stopped doing it ... for awhile. The best I could
tell was that it was just the access network checking to see if someone was
there - and that was enough to reset my countdown timer.
So, I'm sorry I wasn't too much help but you might be able to convince yourself
whether it is benign or not.
