Jeff, I *think* you can do this by connecting the COM output to its  
input (this might be pins 2 & 3, it's been several years since I've done  
COM hardware and I'm not sure) and then running a utility which sends  
data out and sees if it comes back in.  I can't remember the utility I  
used (which ran on DOS though it should work in an OS/2-DOS session).

Theseus might do this but I've never learned enough about it to know  
what its capabilities are.
