Nice of them to provide easy access to this although it probably applies
only the the WinXX versions of the product.

Why? Do you think any of the antivirus vendors can predict the future
perfectly? The way it works is someone creates a virus. Someone gets
infects and reports that a new virus exists. The antivirus vendors
respond with updated virus signatures.
The anitvirus programs contain code that attempts to detect "virus-like"
activity. Of course, this is a moving target.
Any virus author worth his/her salt will verify that the existing virus
signatures will not detect his/her creation.
