Here's what happened. I'm on DSL but occasionally test my dialup
connection as a backup.
I use Dial Other Internet Providers (and occasionally InJoy Dialer,
courtesy of a SCOUG raffle a few years ago). DOIP lets you list several
phone numbers, and each phone number has a field where you specify the
DNS to use.
When you dial the number, DOIP writes that number's DNS to the "resolv"
(not RESOLV2) file.
And resolv takes precedence over RESOLV2. So every time I test (or use)
DOIP, my resolv file will point at the phone number's DNS -- and RESOLV2
will forevermore be ignored.
The solution is to delete resolv when I'm not dialed in (dialing in will
recreate it, and it's not needed when I'm not dialed in). I don't know
how to sense a dialup disconnection, so I might do this during bootup
using startup.cmd. Or perhaps write a "wrapper" .cmd file which will
start DOIP (or InJoy Dialer) and then delete the resolv file when the
dialer is closed.
I don't want to point the dialer phone numbers at my GTE DNS because the
purpose of the dialup is to be operational if GTE (including its DNS
servers) goes down. If DOIP allowed for several DNS IP's for each phone
number I could just put them *all* in there, but DOIP doesn't do that.
(I didn't check InJoy dialer, maybe it does.)
Perhaps I should try the DNS from my Concentric account? I wonder which
one is fastest. Does anyone make a pseudo-nameserver that forwards all
requests to lots of other nameservers and uses the first response it
receives?
