I *think* I'm using the "wrong" domain name server (DNS). When I run
NSLOOKUP, the information that is returned references Earthlink even
though I use Verizon/GTE:

[G:\]nslookup www.gte.net
Server: rns1.earthlink.net
Address: 207.217.126.81
Name: www.gte.net
Address: 206.46.189.11

I *think* the lines
Server: rns1.earthlink.net
Address: 207.217.126.81
mean I'm using a domain name server located at 207.217.126.81, which is
an _Earthlink_ DNS, not a Verizon/GTE DNS.

Why aren't I using the Verizon/GTE domain name servers?

Details:

-- I'm on DSL through Verizon/GTE.

-- My DHCPMON shows that my IP address is a 4.35.*.* Verizon/GTE address
and the ping time for that address is 0 msec (this verifies that I'm
indeed on Verizon/GTE and the IP address is indeed the one my machine is
using).

-- I used to be on dialup through Earthlink and still pay for my
Earthlink account in case my DSL goes out.

-- My TCP/IP Configuration -> Hostname window shows that I'm configured
to use 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3 which are the Verizon/GTE domain name
servers. There are no references to Earthlink or 207.217.126.81.

-- In my \MPTN\ETC\ directory I have these two files with references to
207.217.126.81 (I found them with PMSEEK):

[G:\MPTN\ETC]type resolv
domain earthlink.net
nameserver 207.217.126.81

[G:\MPTN\ETC]type resolv2.bak
domain earthlink.net
nameserver 207.217.126.81
nameserver 207.217.120.83

The questions:

-- 1) Am I correctly reading the NSLOOKUP display? Am I really using
the Earthlink domain name server at 207.217.126.81? And if that's the
case, *why* is this happening since my TCP/IP Configuration shows the
Verizon/GTE DNS?

-- 2) What is the purpose of the file \MPTN\ETC\resolv? What program
configures it? Why doesn't the value in this file match the values in
TCP/IP Configuration -> Hostname?

- Peter
